Nature-based Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

Nature-based Solutions for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

Discover the economic viability and equity impacts of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) in this latest study by Marta Vicarelli, Karen Sudmeier-Rieux, Ali Alsadadi, Aryen Shrestha, Simon Schütze, Michael M. Kang, Madeline Leue, David Wasielewski and Jaroslav Mysiak. They reviewed English-language peer-reviewed studies from 2000 to 2021 and found compelling evidence:

🔹 71% of studies show NbS as consistently cost-effective for hazard mitigation.

🔹 24% indicate cost-effectiveness under certain conditions.

🔹 Ecosystems like mangroves (80%), forests (77%), and coastal ecosystems (73%) are particularly effective.

🔹 NbS often match or surpass engineering-based solutions in cost-effectiveness, with 65% of studies finding NbS always more effective and 26% finding them partially more effective.

Explore how geographic location, biodiversity restoration, property rights, financing sources, and economic methodologies shape the effectiveness of NbS. 🌍
